House of the Year 2016

NEW HOME $500,000 - $650,000

Sinclair Builders entered four homes into the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards for Canterbury. All four properties won awards with two of them winning their local category and subsequently being judged for the National Awards held 26 November 2016.

Built on a 10-acre block in Springbank, this four-bedroom eco home sits well on the land, showcasing Nic Curragh’s unique architecture. Two asymmetric gabled pavilions are linked by a glazed gallery. Hardwearing, black cedar board and batten cladding promises to withstand extreme weather conditions. High winds and snow are challenges on this site. Simple materials – concrete, oiled timber, metal – are used to stunning effect throughout. Trapezoidal bay windows with window seats are a relaxing spot to enjoy the sun and snowy mountain views in winter. Floor-to-ceiling glazing in the gallery allows the sun to heat the concrete floors, keeping the house warm in winter. Stacking glass doors to the east and west of the living room open to the outdoors for alfresco enjoyment whichever way the wind blows. Cost-efficient yet sophisticated, this home is not lacking in life’s simple luxuries. It has solar hot water, LED lighting and a large log burner with wetback underfloor heating. There are two bathrooms and a separate toilet.

This home won Gold, Local Category Winner and a Gold Reserve Award.
